What is a Working Cat?

"Working cats," sometimes referred to as barn cats, are very special cats that are not your typical snuggly, cuddly domesticated house cat. The name comes from their ability to help control the age-old rodent problem at places such as barns, horse stables, feed and grain stores, country clubs and old buildings. Working cats are a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to costly and possibly dangerous pesticides and traps.
These cats, while not typical house pets, deserve a second chance to live somewhere safe and stable. Typically, Animal Friends places cats exclusively into homes where they will remain indoor cats and receive plenty of pampering in love as a true member of the family. Some cats are simply not suited for – nor would they appreciate – an indoor lifestyle alongside a family.

Adopting a Working Cat

To help find homes for cats that are not fully domesticated, but aren't quite feral either, Animal Friends works with adopters who can provide a suitable environment for a working cat. The cats have been spayed or neutered and are current on all essential vaccinations before leaving Animal Friends. Of course, they will require food, water, shelter and regular veterinary care for the rest of their lives after being adopted.
If you're looking for a highly-skilled worker who is enthusiastic, eco-friendly, inexpensive and downright cute, please call Animal Friends at 412.847.7002 or fill out our online adoption application.
